Incendie au marché Sandaga, Dakar
During the night of April 28-29, a new fire broke out at the Sandaga market, specifically in the area where Fulani traders have their stalls. The flames, fueled by the density of the stalls and the presence of flammable goods, quickly spread, plunging vendors and local residents into panic.
This fire adds to a long list of blazes that regularly plague this major trading hub in Dakar. Precarious electrical installations, the lack of safe pedestrian walkways, and insufficient fire prevention measures make the market particularly vulnerable. The traders, often left to fend for themselves, denounce the persistent negligence of the authorities.
"As long as we do not regulate Senegalese-style markets by establishing a civil service management, a safety and hygiene officer, and by imposing strict standards for electricity and equipment, we will continue to witness this scourge," warns an observer who was filming the scene.
