Illegal migration: Why does the "European dream" often turn into a nightmare?

Migration clandestine : Pourquoi le « rêve européen » se transforme-t-il souvent en cauchemar ?

Every year, thousands of young Africans leave their countries hoping to find better opportunities elsewhere. Between dreams of a prosperous future and often harsh realities, migration has become one of the continent's most significant social phenomena. For many, leaving for Europe or other parts of the world represents the hope of a better life. But behind this dream sometimes lies a far more complex reality.

The dream of a better future

For many young Africans, migration symbolizes hope: finding stable employment, supporting their families back home, and accessing better education and healthcare. The image of the West, often presented as a land of opportunity and success, fuels this collective imagination. The success stories of some migrants also reinforce this perception and encourage other young people to embark on the journey.

A reality that is often difficult

However, migration is not always a path to success. Many young people face perilous journeys, particularly across the Sahara Desert or the Mediterranean Sea. Several human tragedies have marked recent history, highlighting the risks associated with these migration routes. One of the most well-known remains the crisis linked to crossings of the Mediterranean, which resulted in thousands of deaths, notably during the 2015 European migration crisis.

Even once they arrive in host countries, migrants can face many challenges: difficulties integrating, precariousness, discrimination or particularly difficult working conditions.

The root causes of migration

Several factors explain this phenomenon: youth unemployment, economic inequality, a lack of professional opportunities, and sometimes political instability. Faced with these challenges, migration appears to some as the only alternative to improve their situation.

Rethinking the future of African youth

The fundamental question may not be simply whether migration is a dream or an illusion, but rather why so many young people feel compelled to leave to achieve their ambitions. The real challenge for African countries is to create conditions that allow young people to succeed at home: jobs, quality education, innovation, and real economic opportunities.

Between hope and responsibility

Migration will undoubtedly remain a reality in a globalized world. However, Africa's future will largely depend on its ability to provide its youth with the means to build their future on the continent. For while leaving may be a dream for some, building sustainable opportunities at home could become the true horizon for African youth.
