Selection: The Mamadou Diakhon and Sidiki Chérif cases are shaking up the French Federation
The handling of the situations of Mamadou Diakhon and Sidiki Chérif has caused strong tensions within the French Football Federation, following the publication of the latest list of the Espoirs (U23) squad.
According to the sports daily L'Équipe, the federation's management was informed late of the two players' absence from the Clairefontaine training camp. This situation has highlighted internal communication breakdowns, raising questions and misunderstandings.
In detail, the two cases differ. Mamadou Diakhon chose to represent Senegal, thus ending any possibility of joining the French national teams. Sidiki Chérif's case, on the other hand, is more of an administrative obstacle. The Fenerbahçe SK striker, currently in the process of becoming a French international, does not yet have the necessary documents to be eligible to play for the French U21 team.
Two distinct situations, therefore, but which led to the same internal conclusion: the need to review certain monitoring and communication mechanisms, in order to avoid further hiccups in the management of high-potential players.
