Aéroport de Ziguinchor : Doudou Ka revendique la paternité du projet face au nouveau régime
Senegalese aviation has just written a new chapter in its history. For the first time, a Boeing 737 from Transair landed on the tarmac of the new Ziguinchor International Airport. This event, hailed as historic by industry stakeholders, marks a symbolic milestone in the gradual commissioning of this strategic infrastructure, reflecting the ambition for a more inclusive and better-distributed aviation sector across the entire country.
Ziguinchor is thus inaugurating a new facility that meets the most rigorous international standards. The infrastructure features an extended runway of 2,000 meters, now capable of accommodating medium-haul aircraft, as well as state-of-the-art navigation and meteorological equipment under the supervision of ASECNA. A major distinguishing feature is its dual civil-military function: the airport incorporates a modern airbase, reinforcing the army's strategic presence in this southern region.
Behind the technical celebration, a political interpretation emerges. Former Minister of Air Transport and former Director General of the Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD), Doudou Ka, emphasized the role of the previous administration in the project's inception. In a written statement, he stressed that this reconstruction was part of the strategic vision of the Senegal Airport Reconstruction Program (PRAS), which ran from 2021 to 2025. According to him, nearly 80% of the work had been completed before the 2024 change of government under Macky Sall. He nevertheless commended the new authorities for ensuring the continuity of the state.
The official inauguration by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is expected in the coming months. It should establish this airport as a key link in the national network, alongside projects in Matam, Tambacounda, Kolda, and Kédougou. For the current Ministry of Transport, Ziguinchor represents a full-scale test of Senegal's ability to realize its aeronautical ambitions. Both a symbol of continuity and a showcase of a new territorial dynamic, Ziguinchor Airport is now emerging as another gateway to Senegal.
