A Saint-Denis, un rassemblement contre le racisme à l'initiative du maire LFI Bally Bagayoko
A rally against racism is to take place on Saturday in front of the town hall of Saint-Denis, in Seine-Saint-Denis, at the call of Bally Bagayoko, the new Insoumis mayor of the city who has been subjected to a hate campaign since his election.
This "large citizen gathering", to which many left-wing political figures - the Insoumis Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Mathilde Panot, Sophia Chikirou, the ecologist Marine Tondelier, a socialist delegation, among others - unions and associations have responded favorably, will be held at 2:00 PM on the forecourt of the town hall of the second largest city in Ile-de-France after Paris.
"The cause we are defending is above" the differences or difficulties for some in appearing alongside La France insoumise, Mr. Bagayoko said on Saturday on Franceinfo, who expects "between 10,000 and 20,000 people", while several parties are expected to be conspicuous by their absence.
"Those who today reduce this march solely to the label of La France insoumise are wrong and ultimately unworthy of this fight, which is a fight against racism, against anti-Semitism and against Islamophobia and all forms of discrimination," said Mr. Bagayoko.
Asked about the absence of Aurore Bergé, the Minister Delegate for the Fight Against Discrimination, he judged that "if there is one minister who should have been there, it is her," while thanking her "particularly" for having shown him her solidarity by telephone.
The mayor, who is of Malian origin, had called for this gathering last Sunday on his Instagram account, after several controversial remarks targeting him were made on CNews.
On Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, on this channel, links were made between Mr. Bagayoko and "the family of great apes", and he was criticized for an attitude of "dominant male".
CNews said it "formally denies that any racist remarks were made" on its channel and management told AFP that comments had been "deliberately distorted on social media, fueling an unfounded controversy".
On Thursday, the Paris prosecutor's office announced it had opened an investigation for "public insult based on origin, ethnicity, nationality, race, or religion," the day after the elected official filed a complaint. In an interview with AFP, he also called for the channel to be shut down. The prefect has joined the case as a civil party, as requested by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.
While Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had described the remarks as "vile" and "absolutely unacceptable", Mr. Bagayoko considered these government endorsements "always welcome", although they came "relatively late".
Mr. Bagayoko's first steps, elected in the first round against the outgoing socialist mayor Mathieu Hanotin and at the end of an extremely tense campaign, were particularly scrutinized and criticized.
After a first tumultuous municipal council meeting, during which the former mayor and his fellow councilors were loudly booed and whistled at, several political leaders expressed outrage at the atmosphere observed, according to them, in several cities won by LFI or various left-wing candidates.
The government had also singled out Mr. Bagayoko for having declared to CNews that "civil servants are first and foremost people who in fact respond to a political order".
