The earthquake was followed by another earthquake, measuring 6.0 magnitude, off the coast of Java, the main Indonesian island.

The tremors destroyed or damaged at least 22 buildings in the central Philippines, according to the latest bulletin from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Thirteen victims were reported in Bogo, a city of 90,000 people located near the northern tip of Cebu Island and close to the epicenter, said Cherry Oliamot, a member of the Bogo rescue team. Five other deaths were recorded in the municipality of San Remigio, in the north of Cebu Island, local police told AFP.

Rescuers previously reported that a public building had collapsed. Manila's ABS-CBN television station reported that four bodies were pulled from a sports center in San Remigio. A child was crushed to death by debris in another part of the city, the same source said.

No tsunami threat in the Philippines

In the Philippines, the local seismological office warned of a possible "minor disturbance in sea level" and urged residents of the central islands of Leyte, Cebu and Biliran to "stay away from the beach and not go to the coast."

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about eleven kilometers east-southeast of Calape, a municipality in the province of Bohol with a population of about 33,000.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that "there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake" and that "no action is required."

The Cebu provincial government reported the collapse of a commercial building and a school in Bantayan, as well as damage to several roads. The quake also caused power outages in Cebu and neighboring central islands, the Philippine Power Grid Corporation said in an advisory, adding that it was still assessing the extent of the damage.

In a video message broadcast live on her official Facebook account, Cebu Provincial Governor Pamela Baricuatro urged residents to "remain calm and move to open areas, stay away from walls or structures that may collapse, and remain vigilant for aftershocks."
