Bardella agressé: le suspect de 74 ans s'en était aussi pris à Eric Zemmour
The Montauban prosecutor's office requested on Monday that the 70-year-old man who smashed an egg on Jordan Bardella's head be placed in pre-trial detention ahead of his immediate appearance trial on Tuesday, prosecutor Bruno Sauvage said in a statement.
This 74-year-old man, known to the justice system "for having committed exactly the same acts" against Eric Zemmour in 2022, indicated in police custody that he had acted "in opposition to the far right," Mr. Sauvage specified.
According to the gendarmerie, this retired farmer showed up Saturday afternoon at a book signing for the president of the National Rally in Moissac (Tarn-et-Garonne), then broke an egg on the president's head before being subdued by National Rally security and arrested. The MEP was then able to resume his book signing.
The custody of the septuagenarian, "in a state of legal recidivism of voluntary violence in particular towards an elected official", has been extended by 24 hours to determine if he had previously participated in the anti-RN rally on the sidelines of the autograph session.
A complaint has been filed on behalf of Jordan Bardella and the National Rally, the party said on Saturday.
Jordan Bardella was also flour-bombed on Tuesday during a visit to an agricultural fair in Vesoul, and a 17-year-old high school student was taken into custody before being released. The minor will have to attend a citizenship course.
In addition to the incidents targeting Mr. Bardella and Mr. Zemmour, the retiree had also thrown eggs in April 2022 at one of Marine Le Pen's campaign buses as it passed through the department. This incident did not result in any prosecution.
