Bosnie: onze morts et plus de 30 blessés dans l'incendie d'une maison de retraite

Eleven people died and more than thirty were injured in the fire that broke out Tuesday evening in a retirement home in the city of Tuzla, in northeastern Bosnia, according to a new toll released by the police on Wednesday.

"According to the latest information, [...] 11 people have died and 30 people have been hospitalized in the Tuzla University Hospital," the cantonal police said in a statement.

The previous report stated 10 dead and 20 injured. Five firefighters and three police officers are among the injured.

An investigation is underway to find "the causes of the fire," a spokesman for the prosecutor's office, Admir Arnautovic, told the press Wednesday morning, adding that "the process of identifying the bodies will take place during the day."

The fire broke out Tuesday evening on the seventh floor of a building in downtown Tuzla, which housed mostly immobile and sick people. It was brought under control about an hour later.

"I had gone to bed when I heard a cracking sound. I don't know if it was the windows of my room breaking," Ruza Kajic, a resident of the nursing home, told the national broadcaster BHRT.

"I live on the third floor (of the nursing home)... I looked out of the window and saw burning things falling from above. I rushed into the corridor. On the upper floors, there are people in bed," added the woman, visibly still in shock.

Images of the scene broadcast by local media show the fire on the upper floor of the nursing home building.

The acting president of the country's tripartite presidency, Zeljko Komsic, offered his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Prime Minister of the Muslim-Croat entity, one of the two entities that make up Bosnia, Nermin Niksic, described the fire as a "catastrophe".
