A shooting occurred Tuesday at a school in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, in the western part of the country. The shooter was found dead.

Nine people were killed Tuesday in a remote area of western Canada, including seven shot dead at a high school and two others found dead in a nearby residence, police said.

"An individual believed to be the shooter was also found dead," apparently from a self-inflicted injury, police added regarding the incident that took place in Tumbler Ridge, a town of 2,300 residents.

In total, ten bodies were discovered inside the town's high school, while a seventh victim succumbed to their injuries during transport to the hospital. Two other people were found dead in a residence that police believe is linked to the attack. The gunman was found dead inside the school, the victim of "self-inflicted injuries," according to police quoted by CBC. Two seriously injured people were airlifted to a hospital, and 25 others received treatment from local medical services.

The trauma of previous killings

“It’s a very close-knit community,” George Rowe, a pastor who has lived in Tumbler Ridge for 35 years and a former substitute teacher at the high school for eight years, told CBC. “We all share this tragedy as if it were my family, or my neighbor’s.”

This shooting has revived the trauma of the Portapique, Nova Scotia, massacre in 2020, when Gabriel Wortman, a 51-year-old dental technician, killed 22 people. Three years earlier, on January 29, 2017, Alexandre Bissonnette, a man with ties to far-right circles, opened fire on worshippers gathered for prayer at a Quebec City mosque, killing six people and seriously wounding several others. And on December 6, 1989, a 25-year-old man claiming to be an "anti-feminist" stormed into classrooms at École Polytechnique in Montreal, armed with a rifle and a knife, before shooting exclusively at women, killing 13 students and a secretary.
