Clearly, Donald Trump wants to show no sign of weakness in the face of Putin's Russia. The Kremlin leader announced on Sunday that his country had successfully tested its Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, a weapon reportedly capable of penetrating any defense shield.
Yesterday, Wednesday, Putin also stated that Moscow had successfully tested a Poseidon-type nuclear super-torpedo capable of causing radioactive waves at sea, which could render coastal cities uninhabitable.
"The United States possesses more nuclear weapons than any other country."
Almost as if in response to this military activity by Russia, the American President announced on Wednesday evening that his country would "immediately resume nuclear weapons testing".
“The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country. This was achieved, in part, through a complete modernization and refurbishment of our arsenal during my first term. Because of the testing programs conducted by other countries, I directed the War Department to conduct nuclear tests on an equal footing. Given the immense destructive power of these weapons, I hated making this decision, but I had no choice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social from South Korea, where he is meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
Nuclear submarines deployed "just off" the Russian coast
He did not specify the nature or methods of the nuclear tests. Trump's announcement is unprecedented. Former President George H.W. Bush had banned such tests at the end of the Cold War.
In addition to resuming nuclear tests, Trump warned Putin that the US had deployed nuclear submarines "just off" the Russian coast.
