Station de taxis volants de Dubaï
Dubai has inaugurated its first flying taxi station, with commercial operations expected to begin by the end of the year, authorities in the Gulf emirate announced on Thursday.
Crown Prince of Dubai and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, visited "Dubai's first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi station, located near the airport," stated the emirate's media office.
The infrastructure, described as "the first of its kind in the world," spans four floors with a total area of 3,100 square meters. It features a two-level parking area, two take-off and landing pads for air taxis, and will be able to accommodate up to 170,000 passengers annually, according to the same source.
The station will serve as "the main hub for air taxi operations," with commercial launch scheduled by year's end, it added.
Three additional stations are planned for Downtown Dubai, the Marina district, and the artificial Palm Jumeirah island. This network will connect Palm Jumeirah to the airport area in approximately 10 minutes—a journey that typically takes 45 minutes by car.
Flights will be operated by California-based Joby Aviation, which will hold exclusive rights for six years.
The launch of this infrastructure "marks a significant milestone in adopting new sustainable transportation modes and enhancing Dubai's readiness for the coming decades," commented Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed in the statement. He emphasized the emirate's commitment to expanding options for residents and visitors while improving their quality of life.
The most populous city in the UAE has established itself as the region's business and tourism hub. In recent weeks, it has been affected by Iran's attacks on its Gulf neighbors in response to the Israeli-American offensive, prior to a ceasefire taking effect.
