Espace : Avec Starlink, Elon Musk passe le cap des 10.000 satellites en orbite
In the space race, Elon Musk is far ahead, notably beating Jeff Bezos' Amazon Leo, the European company Eutelsat, and Chinese companies.
Already crowned the world's richest man, Elon Musk is far ahead in the race to space. According to Look Up, a French startup specializing in space monitoring, the Starlink constellation has indeed crossed the symbolic threshold of 10,000 satellites, 15 times more than its European competitor Eutelsat.
With its latest launch on March 13 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, Starlink now has 10,003 satellites, far ahead of Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation which has 651 satellites.
Jeff Bezos far behind
The Amazon Leo constellation, from the company founded by another American billionaire, Jeff Bezos, has 210 satellites. The Chinese companies Guo Wang and Qian Fan have 154 and 108 satellites respectively.
“Starlink’s crossing of the 10,000 active satellite threshold demonstrates that a private player can now single-handedly structure a large part of the activity in low Earth orbit,” analyzes Michel Friedling, former French space commander and co-founder of Look Up. Commercial megaconstellations play “a central role” in the economic and strategic balance, and the ability to see what is happening in orbit is “a major issue of sovereignty,” he adds.
These consolidated figures are based on data processed by Synapse, the space traffic monitoring and analysis platform developed by Look Up. Synapse aggregates various public and proprietary sources of orbital data, including Starlink launch announcements (excluding inactive satellites), and combines this data with Look Up's own observations. The company is currently deploying a global radar network to monitor space traffic.
