Texas lawmakers have approved a new electoral map sought by Trump. This change could give Republicans five additional seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
Following the Democratic flight, the Texas House of Representatives adopted a new electoral map on Wednesday that could give Republicans up to five additional congressional seats in the 2026 midterm elections. The proposal was approved by a vote of 88 to 52. It now faces a vote in the largely Republican-dominated Texas Senate before being signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott.
Under pressure from Donald Trump, Texas Republican officials successfully approved a controversial redistricting scheme aimed at diluting the influence of Democratic voters, a strategy known as "gerrymandering." Of the 38 seats the state sends to Washington, 25 are currently held by Republicans. The White House's stated goal is to reach 30 seats by next year.
Democrats powerless in the face of the balance of power
In the minority in the local legislature, Democrats attempted to prevent the vote by leaving the state in early August, taking refuge in Chicago and New York to deny their opponents a quorum. This flight only delayed the bill's passage by two weeks. Their return to Austin, announced Monday, paved the way for the Republican vote.
