États-Unis : Le patron du Pentagone obtient le départ du chef d'état-major de l'armée de terre
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth secured the immediate dismissal of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, a US official said, referring to the move which comes amid the ongoing war against Iran.
This very high-ranking officer "will be leaving his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, effective immediately," wrote Sean Parnell, the Pentagon spokesman, on X, wishing him "a happy retirement."
He does not give a reason for this sudden departure.
CBS News, which broke the story, cites an anonymous U.S. official saying that Pete Hegseth wants to appoint someone in his place who can implement Donald Trump and his minister's vision for the Army.
General Randy George, a graduate of the prestigious West Point military academy, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was appointed to this position in 2023, under the mandate of Democratic President Joe Biden.
This is yet another forced departure among the top brass of the US military since Donald Trump's return to power. The US president had, without explanation, dismissed Charles "CQ" Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in early 2025, replacing him with Dan Caine.
Since then, the heads of the navy, the coast guard, the NSA spy agency, and many others have been forced out by the Trump administration.
Pete Hegseth, at the head of a department he renamed the "War Department", asserted that he simply chooses the leaders he wants to run the world's largest-budgeted army.
Democratic opposition lawmakers have expressed concern about a potential politicization of the military, which has traditionally been more isolated from political battles than the rest of the American state apparatus.
