A manhole cover left open on the road caused the death of a 56-year-old woman on Monday in New York.
New York police announced Tuesday that a 56-year-old woman was found unresponsive in a utility shaft Monday night. She reportedly fell in after getting out of her car, which was parked nearby. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing,” a police spokesperson said. According to local media, the victim fell three meters.
A tunnel without a safety barrier?
Images taken on Tuesday showed a black car parked, the driver's door opening right next to the hatch, now secured by barriers.
The New York-based energy company Con Edison, in charge of this conduit, said it was "deeply saddened" by the accident.
"We are actively investigating to determine how this could have happened. Our thoughts are with the victim's family, and safety remains our top priority," a spokesperson said.
