Grégoire elected mayor of Paris by a landslide, a crushing defeat for Dati
Emmanuel Grégoire, the candidate of the united left outside of LFI, won the Paris mayoral election by a landslide on Sunday, beating his right-wing rival Rachida Dati by at least ten points, who failed for a second time to wrest the capital from the left.
According to three estimates, Anne Hidalgo's successor won between 50% and 53.1% of the vote, ahead of the right-wing and centrist candidate who garnered between 37% and 40%. Sophia Chikirou of La France Insoumise came in third with 8.9% to 12% of the vote.
"Paris has decided to remain true to its history," declared Emmanuel Grégoire from La Rotonde, to the cheers of activists. The Socialist MP and former first deputy mayor under Anne Hidalgo sees in his success "a demanding promise" and "the victory of a certain idea of Paris, a vibrant Paris, a progressive Paris, a working-class Paris, a Paris for all."
