War in the Middle East: the death toll

Since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, the war has spread to the region and claimed victims in several Middle Eastern countries.

Due to restrictions imposed on the media, AFP has not been able to independently verify all of the figures below.

These figures are based on data provided by governments, armies, health authorities and relief organizations of the states concerned.

- Iran

The Iranian Ministry of Health stated on March 8 that more than 1,200 people had been killed, including approximately 200 women and 200 children under the age of 12, and that more than 10,000 civilians had been injured.

The NGO Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), headquartered in the United States, reported on March 11 more than 1,825 deaths, including nearly 1,300 civilians, among them at least 200 children.

- Israel

Emergency services and authorities have reported a total of 14 deaths since the start of the war.

According to rescuers, 12 people have been killed, including four minors, and dozens injured in Israel since Iran began firing missiles into its territory in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes, according to a tally compiled by AFP based on their announcements.

The Israeli army, for its part, announced the death of two soldiers during fighting in southern Lebanon.

- Lebanon

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, 886 people have been killed since the start of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2, including 111 children and 38 healthcare workers. Authorities have reported 2,141 wounded. More than one million people are registered as displaced.

The Lebanese army announced that three of its soldiers had been killed.

Hezbollah has not provided any information on its losses.

- The Gulf States

Gulf authorities and the US Central Command (Centcom) have reported 26 deaths in the region since the start of the Iranian attacks, including 13 civilians.

The other people killed were military personnel or members of the security forces, and among them, seven were Americans.

- In Kuwait, the army and the Ministry of Health have recorded six deaths: two Kuwaiti soldiers, two border guards and two civilians, including an 11-year-old girl.

- The Emirati Ministry of Defence and the Dubai media office reported seven deaths, five civilians and two military personnel who perished in a helicopter crash attributed to a technical failure.

- The Saudi civil defense agency reported two deaths among the civilian population.

- Bahrain's Interior Ministry also reported two deaths.

- Oman's maritime security center announced the death of a sailor at sea and two foreign workers during a drone attack on an industrial area.

- In Qatar, the Ministry of the Interior stated that 16 people had been injured, with no reports of deaths.

- Centcom also confirmed the deaths of six American servicemen in Kuwait and another in Saudi Arabia.

- Iraq

At least 53 people have been killed in Iraq since the start of the conflict, according to an AFP tally based on statements from armed groups and official officials.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday the death of a French soldier in a drone attack in the Erbil region. This is the first French soldier killed in the conflict.

- The US military, for its part, reported six deaths on Friday in the crash of a refueling plane that occurred the previous day in Iraq, stressing that "the loss of the aircraft was not due to enemy fire".

- Pro-Iranian groups in Iraq have reported the deaths of 39 of their members in airstrikes which they attribute to Israel and the United States.

- Kurdish rebel organizations have announced the death of at least five Iranian Kurdish militants in strikes attributed to Iran against their positions in the north of the country.

- Kurdish sources said that an airport security officer was killed in a drone attack on Erbil airport.

- Officials said a civilian was killed by rocket shrapnel following a strike southeast of Baghdad.

- Jordan

According to the army, 29 people were injured in different regions of Jordan by falling debris from Iranian missiles and drones.

No deaths have been reported.

- Syria

According to Syrian state media, eight people were injured by falling debris during exchanges of fire between Iran and Israel on March 9.

- American soldiers

The US military has recorded approximately 200 wounded service members, including ten "seriously," in seven different countries since the start of the war against Iran.

"The vast majority of injuries are minor, and more than 180 soldiers have already resumed their mission," a spokesperson added.

Thirteen American soldiers have been killed since the start of operations.
