Hantavirus : le navire de croisière met le cap vers Tenerife après l’évacuation des cas suspects en Europe
The MV Hondius cruise ship, suspected of being a hantavirus hotspot, which was stranded off the coast of Cape Verde after the deaths of three passengers, has resumed its voyage towards the port of Granadilla on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Several passengers were evacuated from the ship. Contact tracing of those infected continues.
A plane carrying a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship, the epicenter of the hantavirus outbreak, landed in the Netherlands on Wednesday after several passengers were evacuated from the ship off Cape Verde, according to Agence France Presse (AFP).
A different situation than that of Covid-19
For his part, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) told AFP that he "does not think" the situation is similar to that at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. "For now, the risk to the rest of the world is low," he added.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), an EU agency, was more circumspect on Wednesday as "many uncertainties remain" about the epidemic, calling for "a precautionary approach to reduce the likelihood of further transmission."
According to the WHO, three people, two sick crew members and one person who had been in contact with one of the confirmed cases, were evacuated from the ship and then boarded medical flights departing from the capital of Cape Verde, Praia.
