Il faisait semblant d’être aveugle et a perçu un million d’euros d’indemnités en 50 ans
An Italian man who claimed to have gone blind following a work accident in 1972 was actually able to see perfectly, law enforcement discovered when they monitored him as he went about his daily life.
Distressing images. A septuagenarian living in the Montecchio Maggiore area of Italy was arrested this Monday on suspicion of defrauding the country's health services. Since a workplace accident in 1972, the man had claimed to be blind and had received benefits for this reason, Rai said. However, an investigation revealed that he suffered from no disability.
Stop payments
Investigations had indeed been launched by Italian law enforcement agencies specializing in financial crimes. For two months, the suspect was observed and filmed. He was notably seen engaging in activities such as gardening with power tools or choosing fruits and vegetables at market stalls. Investigators notified the relevant authorities, who stopped all financial assistance to the septuagenarian.
In total, over a period of more than 50 years, the falsely blind man had received a total of more than one million euros. These sums were, among other things, supposed to allow him to be accompanied in the tasks he could no longer perform alone due to his blindness. The suspect will initially be subject to taxation on a portion of the amounts unduly received. He will then be brought before the courts.
