A Japanese woman was arrested in Tokyo after her daughter's body was found in a freezer.
A 75-year-old Japanese woman has been arrested for keeping her daughter's body in a freezer for 20 years, police said Thursday.
On Tuesday, a woman went to police with a family member to report that she had kept a body in her freezer and that "it was her daughter" born in 1975, a local police spokesperson said. Investigators went to the house northeast of Tokyo and discovered the curled body of a woman wearing a T-shirt and underwear in the freezer.
An autopsy will be performed
Police said that "the body was in an advanced state of decomposition" and that an autopsy would be carried out to determine the cause of death.
The woman, arrested on suspicion of abandoning a body, told investigators that the smell filled the house and that she had then purchased the freezer to place her daughter's body in, according to the police spokesperson. The woman, who had several children, had been living alone since her husband's death a few weeks ago, the police spokesperson said.
