China will remove tariffs for all African countries from Friday, with the exception of Eswatini, which has relations with Taiwan.
In December 2024, China had already implemented a tariff exemption policy for 33 of Africa's least developed countries. This policy has now been extended to 53 countries and will remain in effect until April 30, 2028. It is unclear what will happen after that date.
Beijing boasted of being the first major economy to offer unilateral zero-duty tariff treatment to Africa.
But analysts say that, while China is seizing this opportunity to strengthen its soft power, tariffs are rarely the main obstacle for African exporters, whose continent has a huge trade deficit with China.
A huge imbalance
"China is positioning itself as the champion of trade liberalization and a favorable economic partner for Africa, unlike Donald Trump and the United States," explains Lauren Johnston, senior researcher at the AustChina Institute.

The extension of China's zero tariff regime could increase African agricultural exports, which "will help raise rural incomes, improve rural productivity and, in the long run, reduce hunger and poverty," explains Ms. Johnston.
