The highly anticipated biopic about the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, crushed the competition at the North American box office this weekend with $97 million in revenue, according to industry estimates published Sunday.
"Michael" looks back at the first part of Michael Jackson's life and his rise to fame. The lead role is played by Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the artist who passed away in 2009.
"This is a record-breaking opening for a biographical musical," said David A. Gross, an analyst with Franchise Entertainment Research.
However, "most critics feel that the film is superficial and glosses over the more complex aspects of the artist's life," he added, referring to the child abuse allegations against the pop star.
The production team hinted that a second installment was in the works.
After spending the last few weeks at the top of the charts, "Super Mario Galaxy, the movie", based on the very popular Nintendo video game, has fallen to second place in the rankings, earning $21.2 million.
"Last Chance Project" takes third place with $13.2 million in revenue.
This Amazon MGM Studios film stars Ryan Gosling as a professor turned astronaut who wakes up aboard a spaceship on a mission to save Earth, which is threatened by the extinction of the Sun.
The horror film "The Mummy Awakens", telling the story of a young girl possessed by a demon, comes in fourth place with $5.6 million in revenue.
The couple formed by Robert Pattinson and Zendaya closes this top 5 with their film "The Drama", with $2.6 million in revenue.
