Le "Dôme d'or", bouclier antimissiles voulu par Trump, estimé à 1.200 milliards de dollars sur 20 ans (agence parlementaire)
The "Golden Dome," the missile defense system for the United States championed by Donald Trump, could cost approximately $1.2 trillion over 20 years, the Congressional Budget Office estimated Tuesday.
In 2025, the American president announced his intention to develop this anti-missile shield based on the model of the Israeli "Iron Dome", and to put it into service before the end of his term in 2029.
He then estimated the total cost at "approximately $175 billion once completed".
But many experts at that time pointed out that the project was unrealistic and redundant in view of the missile defense systems currently possessed by the United States.
In a report published Tuesday by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), this independent parliamentary agency estimates that a national missile defense system with capabilities broadly aligned with those required by Donald Trump "would cost about $1.2 trillion to develop, deploy, and operate over 20 years."
According to the CBO, the space component of the system would represent almost 60% of the total costs.
Like the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or "Star Wars", launched by Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, the "Golden Dome" aims to position interceptor satellites in space.
The goal is to quickly destroy any intercontinental ballistic missile heading towards US territory.
China and Russia had declared last year that they strongly opposed this project by Donald Trump.
