Le maire LFI de Saint-Denis Bally Bagayoko annonce qu'il va porter plainte après des propos sur CNews dénoncés comme racistes
The mayor of Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko, announced on Saturday that he would file a complaint against the CNews channel after the broadcast of a sequence deemed racist by several left-wing leaders.
The LFI mayor of Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko, announced to AFP on Saturday, March 28, that he would file a complaint after a segment on CNews concerning him was described as racist by several left-wing officials, which the channel rejects by denouncing an "unfounded controversy".
"There will be a complaint filed (...) I will very soon take the initiative of a large gathering and I would like everyone to be there (...) against racism and against fascism," added Bally Bagayoko, elected in the first round on March 15 in the second city of Ile-de-France.
Born in the Hauts-de-Seine department to Malian parents, Bally Bagayoko faced numerous racist comments on social media after his election. But this time, the mayor is targeting a segment broadcast Friday evening on CNews: remarks made on set by psychologist Jean Doridot during a debate about the first days of his term, at a time when the new mayor is accused of wanting to get rid of local government employees who are not aligned with his policies.
LFI denounces a "blatant and unashamed" racism
"Is this mayor 'trying to push the boundaries,'" the presenter asked. "Surely there's a bit of that. Now, it's important to remember that Homo sapiens, we are social mammals and members of the great ape family. And therefore, in every community, in every tribe—our hunter-gatherer ancestors lived in tribes—there is a leader whose role is to establish his authority," said Jean Doridot.
In response, Mathilde Panot, leader of the La France Insoumise parliamentary group, denounced the X website as "blatant and unashamed racism," comparing Bally Bagayoko to "a monkey and a 'tribal chief'." She announced she would be filing a complaint with Arcom, the French broadcasting and digital media regulator, a move followed by other left-wing elected officials.
Like the communist senator Ian Brossat, who in passing labeled CNews a "racist cesspool", or the ecologist MP Léa Balage El Mariky for whom "poubelle-news" is "still stuck in its racism against the new mayors and specifically against Bally Bagayoko".
CNews management told AFP that Jean Doridot's remarks had been "deliberately distorted on social media, fueling an unfounded controversy." Later in the program, the psychologist was given the floor again and denied any racist intent. "I wanted to make my point universal. Perhaps it wasn't clear enough," Doridot stated.
