The gunman who tried to break into a press gala in Washington appeared to be targeting senior officials in the Trump administration, the acting US Attorney General said Sunday.

"Very preliminary" information leads investigators to believe the man "was targeting members of the administration" of President Donald Trump, who was present at the gala, Todd Blanche told CBS News.

The shooter "is not actively cooperating" but investigators believe he travelled to Washington by train from Los Angeles via Chicago, said Todd Blanche, who was also at the dinner along with hundreds of other people.
