Liban : qui est Fadel Shaker, le chanteur devenu islamiste, arrêté après des années de fuite
A Lebanese pop star in the 2000s, Fadel Shaker disappeared after deadly clashes in 2013. Having become close to a radical preacher, he was arrested on Saturday after more than a decade hiding in a Palestinian refugee camp.
From fame to flight, before arrest. After more than ten years on the run, Fadel Shaker was arrested Saturday at the entrance to the Palestinian camp of Ain al-Heloué, near Saida, Lebanese judicial sources said.
Born to a Lebanese father and a Palestinian mother, the singer took refuge in this camp, the largest in the country, outside the control of the authorities.
He was accused of supporting radical preacher Ahmad al-Assir in 2013 during clashes with the Lebanese army that left around 20 soldiers dead.
In 2020, a military court sentenced him to twenty-two years in prison for providing financial and logistical support to a group classified as terrorist.
Before his radicalization, Fadel Shaker was one of the most well-known voices in the Arab world, famous for his romantic ballads. In the 2010s, he publicly renounced music and supported Sheikh al-Assir's movement, before going into hiding in Ain al-Helouh.
According to a close source quoted by AFP, the artist, who claims to be "innocent," remains "confident in the independence of the justice system."
In July, he resurfaced with a song filmed in the camp, which was viewed more than 113 million times on YouTube — an unexpected success for a singer many thought had disappeared.
