McDonald's, l'Iran et le pape: la conférence de presse surréaliste de Trump
Monday at the White House took a surreal turn when, after a McDonald's delivery to the Oval Office, Donald Trump held a press conference that mixed together the war in Iran, attacks against Pope Leo XIV and controversy over an image depicting him as Jesus.
The American president, a big fan of fast food, left the White House to pick up two bags of hamburgers, a scene intended to promote his policy of not taxing tips.
"I have an order for you, Mr. President," said the delivery woman, Sharon Simmons, as she handed him the paper bags.
"This doesn't look like a staged event, does it?" Donald Trump quipped, arguing that this grandmother of ten, originally from Arkansas (southern United States), would have received $11,000 in refunds this year thanks to his policy.
But as is often the case with the Republican, the discussion quickly veered towards more sensitive topics.
"Mr. President, have you published this photo of yourself as Jesus Christ?", a reporter asked, referring to an AI-generated image of him as Jesus, posted on his Truth Social account.
"I did post it, I thought it was me dressed as a doctor, and that it had something to do with the Red Cross," the US president said. "And I treat people. I treat them a lot," he added.
The questions then shifted to the war in Iran. After the US blockade of Iranian ports came into effect, Donald Trump claimed that Iranian representatives had called Washington to reach an agreement "at all costs".
Still accompanied by the delivery woman, who was visibly perplexed, Donald Trump also ruled out any idea of apologizing to Pope Leo XIV, whom he described as "very lax on the issue of crime and other subjects" after his statements against the war.
"Pope Leo made false statements. He was fiercely opposed to what I am doing regarding Iran, and we cannot accept an Iran with nuclear weapons," the septuagenarian said.
The president then addressed one of his favorite topics: the ban on transgender people in women's sports competitions, questioning Sharon Simmons on this subject.
"I don't really have an opinion on that," the delivery woman replied. "I'm here to talk about the tax exemption for tips."
The reporters then asked her if White House staff gave good tips. "Wait!" Donald Trump exclaimed, pulling a $100 bill from his pocket and handing it to Ms. Simmons. "You reminded me," the president said with a smile.
