Mexique : DĂ©cor singulier Ă lâenterrement du baron de la drogue El Mencho
A golden coffin, crane trucks laden with flowers, a regional orchestra playing Mexican corridos, a handful of people gathered near the tomb, soldiers everywhere. This was the scene at the Zapopan (Guadalajara) municipal cemetery yesterday, Monday, March 2nd, during the burial of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho," the notorious drug lord who was fatally wounded during a military operation in Jalisco.
Murders, kidnappings, and massacres
The 59-year-old man, considered the world's most wanted criminal in 2018, now rests in this cemetery located near a military installation about 5 km from the stadium that will host matches of the 2026 World Cup.
"El Mencho" founded the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) upon his return from the United States, where he had served time in prison for heroin trafficking.
His criminal organization is accused of murders, kidnappings, and massacres. The United States had placed a $15 million bounty on the Mexican's head.
Mexico had descended into violence
His death on February 22nd plunged the North American country into violence. Members of a cartel erected 250 roadblocks and set fire to businesses in 20 states, including Guadalajara, the host city of the upcoming World Cup. At least 74 people were killed. Most were cartel members. Twenty-five members of the National Guard, a judge, and a prosecutor also perished.
