MORT DE LIONEL JOSPIN : «UN HOMMAGE NATIONAL LUI SERA RENDU JEUDI», ANNONCE EMMANUEL MACRON
From the Arab World Institute, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, announced that a national tribute will be paid this Thursday to Lionel Jospin, former Prime Minister who died on Sunday at the age of 88.
A national tribute will be paid this Thursday morning, March 26, to former Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, who died on Sunday at the age of 88, the head of state announced on Monday.
“First and foremost, I want to express the emotion and respect of the entire nation and announce that a national tribute will be paid to him on Thursday,” declared Emmanuel Macron, without specifying whether the ceremony would take place at Les Invalides. The President of the Republic had earlier praised a “great French destiny.”
ANOTHER TRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
Another "tribute" is also planned at the National Assembly this Tuesday, according to the agenda of its president Yaël Braun-Pivet.
Lionel Jospin indicated in January that he had undergone "serious surgery" and was recovering at home, without disclosing any details. A respected and unifying figure of the left until the very end, he had been François Mitterrand's Minister of Education between 1988 and 1992 and First Secretary of the Socialist Party from 1981 to 1988, and again from 1995 to 1997.
He subsequently enabled a "plural left," bringing together socialists, ecologists, and communists, to govern. The man who defined himself as an "austere man who laughs" led this coalition to a surprise victory in the 1997 legislative elections, called by President Jacques Chirac after a dissolution intended, on the contrary, to consolidate his power.
