«ON MARCHE SUR LA TÊTE» : UN CHAT ASSIGNÉ À RÉSIDENCE APRÈS UN CONFLIT DE VOISINAGE
In Agde, Dominique Valdès paid exorbitant sums because of her cat, against which her neighbor filed a complaint, tired of seeing it cross his fence. The owner now keeps her normally wandering feline confined.
A four-legged delinquent who scoffs at court decisions. Rémi, a ginger cat well cared for by his owner, Dominique Valdès, used to roam freely in his neighborhood in Agde (Hérault). However, the neighbor didn't approve of the feline's habits. He filed a complaint, accusing the animal of first leaving paw prints on a freshly painted stucco wall, then urinating on a duvet and causing several other problems in the garden.
Although Dominique contested the accusations, the Béziers court ruled in favor of the plaintiff , and she was ordered last January to pay €1,250 in damages. This sum was accompanied by a penalty of €30 for each subsequent intrusion of the ginger cat into her neighbor's garden.
Dominique told CNEWS she deplored the absurdity of this decision. "A cat climbs very easily, it jumps very high," she said.
And… Rémi did it again. During the summer, Dominique was summoned to court once more and forced to pay another fine. “To be sentenced to pay 250 euros for that… Honestly, it’s outrageous,” she fumed. Since then, the animal has remained confined to the family home , for fear of further legal action by its owner.
Anne Bénézech, director of the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) in Montpellier, pointed out that this is a form of "house arrest".
"The rural code states that cats have the right to roam 1,000 meters from their homes," she emphasized to CNEWS. "It doesn't specify whether this applies to private or public areas. This means that all cats roam, hunt, run... and like to go into gardens. That's what the rural code says," the association's director stressed.
While it breaks Dominique's heart to keep her cat locked up, she tries her best to control him. This situation could discourage adoptions of abandoned animals, for fear of neighborhood disputes.

Ton VOISIN.
