Plus de 3.000 migrants sont morts en 2025 en tentant de rejoindre l'Espagne, selon une ONG
More than 3,000 migrants died in 2025 trying to reach Spain, according to a report published Monday by a Spanish NGO, a figure that has fallen sharply due to the very sharp decrease in the number of attempts to cross by sea to reach the country.
According to the migrant rights association Caminando Fronteras, most of the 3,090 deaths recorded up to December 15 took place on the Atlantic migration route between Africa and the Canary Islands, considered one of the most dangerous in the world.
The Caminando Fronteras report, based on testimonies from migrants' families and official statistics of rescued persons, confirms the latest figures from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.
These official data show a 40.4% decrease in the number of migrants who entered Spain irregularly between January 1 and December 15 compared to the same period last year, with 35,935 arrivals in total (60,311 in 2024).
Nearly half of these irregular entries into the country took place via the Atlantic migration route, from the coasts of West Africa to the Canary Islands.
However, while there has been a "significant" decrease in migrant arrivals in the Canary Islands in particular, "a new, more distant and more dangerous route" to the archipelago has emerged with departures from Guinea, the NGO points out.
Among the victims recorded by Caminando Fronteras are 437 children and 192 women. Most of the deaths occurred at sea: only three migrant deaths were recorded on land.
Caminando Fronteras also noted an increase in the number of boats leaving Algeria, mainly bound for the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera in the Mediterranean.
Traditionally used by Algerians, this route also saw an influx of migrants from Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan in 2025, according to the association.
The number of deaths on this road has doubled this year to reach 1,037, compared to 2024, according to the NGO.
In 2024, at least 10,457 migrants had died or disappeared while trying to reach Spain, according to Caminando Fronteras, the highest number recorded since the association began its census in 2007.
To explain the decrease in irregular migrant arrivals in Spain, the NGO points in particular to "an increase and a continuation of funding from third countries to curb migratory flows, extending the border from the countries of origin".
Departures, particularly via the Atlantic route (Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Conakry etc.), are being prevented with an increase in checks.
Spain is one of the three main entry points for migrants into Europe, along with Italy and Greece.
