Pour Macron, Poutine est un "ogre, un prédateur"
Vladimir Putin is "a predator, an ogre at our gates" who "needs to continue eating" for "his own survival," Emmanuel Macron warned on Tuesday, calling on Europeans "not to be naive" in the face of Russia, which will be "a lasting destabilizing force."
"Since 2007-2008 (the Russian intervention in Georgia, editor's note), President Putin has rarely kept his commitments. He has constantly been a destabilizing force. And he has sought to revise borders to extend his power," the French president stressed in an interview on LCI.
The French President believes that "Russia has permanently become a destabilizing force and a potential threat to many of us."
"A country that invests 40% of its budget in such equipment, which has mobilized an army of more than 1.3 million men, will not return to a state of peace and an open democratic system overnight," he warned.
"So, including for his own survival, he (Putin) needs to continue eating. That's it. And so he's a predator, he's an ogre at our gates. I'm not saying that France will be attacked tomorrow, but he's a threat to Europeans (...) We mustn't be naive," insisted the head of state.
This interview was conducted following the meeting in Washington between Donald Trump and several European leaders, where it was announced that a meeting would be held between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
But in another interview with the American channel NBC News, Emmanuel Macron made no secret of the fact that he did not share Donald Trump's optimism about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement.
"When I look at the situation and the facts, I don't see President Putin wanting peace now, but maybe I'm too pessimistic," he said.
