Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that "the Iranians had shot down" an American helicopter near Hormuz, promising to "retaliate".
These statements call into question the optimism displayed just a few hours ago by the American president regarding the swift conclusion of an agreement with Iran.
"I have just been informed by our magnificent military that the Iranians shot down one of our highly advanced Apache helicopters last night while it was flying over the Strait of Hormuz. Both pilots are safe and unharmed. Nevertheless, the United States must necessarily respond to this attack," the American president wrote on his Truth Social network.
"We are in the final stages of what will be a very, very good agreement" with Iran, he assured on Monday night, mentioning a timeframe of "two to three days" for it to be concluded.
This is the second manned aircraft that the United States has confirmed was shot down by Iranian forces since the start of the war on February 28.
An F-15E fighter-bomber crashed in April in southwestern Iran. Its two pilots were rescued, one of them after a particularly spectacular military operation.
The Apache helicopter is an attack helicopter, with a crew of two, equipped with a machine gun and also capable of being armed with missiles.
The U.S. military command for the Middle East (Centcom) had previously indicated that "two crew members" of an Apache AH-64 helicopter had been rescued by U.S. forces near the coast of Oman, this "two hours" approximately after their aircraft was hit.
According to the same source, a US naval surface drone was used in the rescue operation.
In March, the United States lost a refueling plane and its six crew members in a crash, which, however, was not caused by enemy fire, according to the military.
Prior to that, Kuwaiti armed forces had mistakenly shot down three American F-15s, although all six crew members were able to eject.
