Un drapeau palestinien déployé sur la tour Eiffel à Paris, six interpellations
Six people were arrested and taken into custody on Friday in Paris after displaying a Palestinian flag on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, AFP learned from a police source on Saturday.
Shortly before 5:00 PM (3:00 PM GMT) on Friday, police were called about people displaying a four-by-three-meter Palestinian flag on the iconic building in the French capital, after they climbed onto the roof of the "Madame" restaurant on the first floor of the tower.
This action, claimed by the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion, aimed to commemorate the Nakba, "catastrophe" in Arabic, a period during which approximately 760,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
Extinction Rebellion activists were arrested for "unauthorized entry into a classified site and endangering the lives of others," a police source added.
LFI MEP Rima Hassan gave them her support on X. "Hidalgo (the former mayor of Paris, editor's note) was not taken into custody for lighting up the Eiffel Tower in the colors of the Israeli flag," she wrote.
Hamas' armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, carried out the October 7, 2023 attack on towns in southern Israel, which killed 1,221 people according to Israeli authorities. They also abducted 251 hostages, who were taken to Gaza.
Israel's military campaign of retaliation has devastated the Gaza Strip and killed tens of thousands of people.
A truce came into effect on October 10, 2025 in the territory, part of which is controlled by Hamas and the other part by the Israeli army.
