Une trentaine d'étudiants de Guinée-Bissau retenus à l'aéroport de Lisbonne
More than 30 students from Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony, are currently being held at Lisbon airport due to a lack of evidence of their intention to study in Portugal, Portuguese police said Monday evening.
The police opened "34 entry refusal procedures" due to the lack of supporting documents concerning the purpose and conditions of their stay," according to a press release.
The authorities also cite "insufficient means of subsistence and/or the absence of proof of accommodation compatible with the planned length of stay."
"There are currently 33 of them, because one case was re-examined and the decision overturned," a spokesperson for the Public Security Police (PSP) in charge of border controls told AFP.
"Several of them have requested a reassessment of their situation, which is currently being analyzed," he said.
Eliseu Sambu of the Association of Students of Guinea-Bissau in Lisbon (AEGBL), who has been accompanying these Guinean students for several days, told Lusa that they have student visas and that their names appear on the admission lists for public higher education in Portugal.
"We sent emails to the Embassy but we have not received any response" so far, he said.
The Portuguese police also assured that all these people, currently in the international zone of the airport, "had access to legal assistance," as well as meals and health care.
