Affaire Abdou Nguer : trois courriers urgents envoyés au…
The presiding judge of the High Court, Mamadou Diouf, has postponed the trial of Abdou Nguer, who was caught in the act, until March 20th. The judge made this decision last Friday after calling the case and confirming the presence of the lawyers.
This one-month postponement is "unusual, extremely rare for those accustomed to attending summary trial hearings," notes Les Échos. The newspaper reveals that the lawyers for the well-known columnist, to denounce this measure, sent letters to the head of the Bar Association, the president of the Court of Appeal, and the president of the Supreme Court. "They condemn the judge's attitude, which, according to them, borders on abuse of power and demonstrates a certain bias," the newspaper reports.
In their correspondence, the same source continues, the lawyers emphasize that Judge Diouf, after ordering the referral of their client's case, informed them that they could not file a request for provisional release. They denounce this "unilateral measure" which, according to them, violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Abdou Nguer was arrested and placed under a detention order for spreading false news following virulent remarks against the statement by the public prosecutor on the death of student Abdoulaye Bâ during the violent demonstrations at UCAD.
