PM Diop, his parents, his girlfriend, and his friend, all arrested following the tragic death of Binetou Guèye, the former's wife, have had varying fates. In its edition of Tuesday, December 30, L'Observateur reports that the husband has been remanded in custody.
While the investigation was initially leaning towards "involuntary manslaughter," the investigating judge reclassified the charges as murder. "The prosecution seems convinced that the explanation provided by PM Diop, who claimed to have unintentionally shot his wife, is untenable."
This decision brings relief to the family of the deceased, who remained skeptical of the "accidental shooting" version.
As for the associates of the main suspect, the newspaper of the Future Media Group reports that they benefited from a degree of leniency despite the seriousness of the suspicions of obstruction of justice. Accused of attempting to conceal evidence, notably the husband's cell phone, PM Diop's parents and his alleged partner were released under judicial supervision. The husband's friend, who was present at the scene of the explosion, was placed under house arrest with an electronic monitoring bracelet.
