Affaire des 200 millions F CFA : condamnés en appel, les 9 policiers saisissent la Cour suprême
The legal saga involving nine police officers and their informant, prosecuted for the theft of 200 million CFA francs from two Malian merchants, has taken a new turn. In its edition of Tuesday, May 5, Les Échos reports that the Dakar Court of Appeal has upheld most of the sentences handed down in the first instance on May 28, 2025, by the Pikine-Guédiawaye Criminal Court.
On April 21, the newspaper reports, the Court of Appeal sentenced the ten defendants to two years' imprisonment. In reaching its verdict, the court only upheld the charge of theft committed by an organized group, dismissing the charges of criminal conspiracy and abuse of authority.
In civil court, the convicted men will be jointly liable for 200 million in damages to the merchants Vonama Ombatidé and Aly Djiguiba. Furthermore, the latter, initially suspected of money laundering, have been definitively acquitted of this charge.
An ambush in Zac Mbao
The case dates back to the night of July 20-21, 2024, according to the same source. The two merchants were transporting 650 million CFA francs, a sum they claim was documented by a video recorded in Dubai. They were intercepted at the Sedima roundabout based on information provided by Doudou Cissé, a well-known informant.
After being taken to a secluded area in Zac Mbao, their vehicle was searched by officers. At the police station, only 450 million CFA francs were officially recorded, revealing a shortfall of 200 million CFA francs. The investigation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC), supported in particular by CCTV footage showing police officers unloading bags of money, led to the arrest of the suspects.
Challenging this decision, the police officers' lawyers filed an appeal. The case is now pending before the Supreme Court, which will have the final say.
