Affaire des 8 milliards F CFA : le nouveau combat de Lat Diop
After more than a year in pretrial detention, Lat Diop was granted provisional release under electronic monitoring last November. He is being prosecuted for embezzlement of public funds and extortion during his time as director general of Lonase (the national lottery). Since his release from prison, the former minister under Macky Sall, whose health is reportedly precarious, has embarked on another battle: to receive his medical treatment without hindrance. "Every medical appointment has become an obstacle course," reports Les Échos, which raised the alarm in its Monday edition, citing "sources close to the case."
The newspaper reports that to see a doctor, Lat Diop must submit a written request. "This is followed by a waiting period of unpredictable length [a minimum of fifteen days]. Once the consultation is obtained, if further tests are prescribed, the process starts all over again: new request, new wait, new uncertainty," the daily newspaper explains.
Furthermore, Les Échos continues, Lat Diop, who is barred from leaving the country, is unable to keep a long-scheduled appointment at the American Hospital of Paris, where he has been treated for several years by a specialist. The former minister's entourage is worried about this situation, as his health is deteriorating daily, the newspaper reports. It asserts that the "situation is all the more concerning given that certain tests or treatments are reportedly not available locally under the same conditions" as in Paris.
