Affaire Maimouna Ndour Faye : Le CDEPS dénonce une atteinte grave à la liberté de la presse
The Council of Broadcasters and Press Publishers of Senegal (CDEPS) reacted strongly to the questioning of the Director General of the 7TV channel, Maimouna Ndour Faye, which took place on Tuesday evening in the premises of the television station, while she was broadcasting a program with the journalist Madiambal Diagne.
In a public statement, the CDEPS expressed its "firm condemnation" and "profound indignation" at this act, which it described as a forceful intrusion into a media outlet. The organization considers this a clear violation of press freedom and the fundamental right to information, guaranteed by the Constitution of Senegal, particularly in Articles 8 and 10.
"Such acts undermine the sacrosanct principles guaranteed by the Constitution of Senegal," the statement emphasizes, referring to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
"The rule of law requires absolute respect for the independence of the media."
Mamadou Ibra Kane and his colleagues reiterate that "giving a person a voice, regardless of their legal status, is in no way a crime" under Senegalese law. Therefore, they consider this arrest to be an obstruction of the journalist's work.
"Journalism is not a crime. The rule of law requires absolute respect for the independence of the media," the organization insists, calling on the authorities to guarantee the protection of journalists and to cease all forms of intimidation against private media.
Faced with what it describes as a rise in attacks and attempts to silence the press, the CDEPS announces the urgent convening of its governing bodies to determine how to proceed with this matter.
Finally, the council calls for the mobilization of all citizens and civil society actors "aware of the vital role of press freedom in the democratic functioning of the country".
The journalist was eventually placed in police custody at the Ouakam Territorial Brigade for endangering state security and undermining the authority of the judiciary.
