Loi anti-LGBT : La demande de Volker Turk (Haut-commissaire des Nations Unies) à Diomaye Faye
The law toughening penalties for acts against nature, proposed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and passed yesterday in the National Assembly, has sparked international outrage. Following Jean-Luc Mélenchon , Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has also spoken out.
In a statement received by Seneweb, the Austrian lawyer expressed deep concern about the adoption of this new anti-LGBT law. "The adoption by the Senegalese Parliament of a new law that doubles the maximum prison sentence for consensual homosexual relations to 10 years and punishes the so-called 'promotion, support, or financing' of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality is deeply concerning. It goes against the sacrosanct human rights we all enjoy: the right to respect, dignity, privacy, equality, and the freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly," the United Nations official stated.
Volker Türk added: "These rights are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as in the human rights treaties to which Senegal is a party. This law exposes people to hate crimes, abuse, arbitrary arrests, blackmail, and widespread discrimination in the areas of education, health, employment, and housing. Furthermore, it restricts the legitimate work of human rights defenders, the media, and the freedom of expression of all in Senegal."
To curb the adoption of this new law that toughens penalties for acts against nature, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is sending a message to Diomaye Faye. "I urge the President of the Republic not to promulgate this harmful law and the authorities to repeal the existing discriminatory law and to respect the human rights of all in Senegal, without discrimination," said Volker Turk.
As a reminder, the law passed yesterday in the National Assembly doubles the penalties for acts against nature. These acts are now punishable by five to ten years in prison. This law was passed in a context marked by a wave of arrests of suspected homosexuals who are allegedly spreading HIV/AIDS.
