Migration irrégulière : six capitaines de pirogue déférés devant le Pool judiciaire financier
Six pirogue captains were brought before the Financial Judicial Pool on March 6, 2026, by the National Division for Combating Migrant Smuggling and Related Practices (DNLT). They are being prosecuted for criminal conspiracy, attempted migrant smuggling, manslaughter, and complicity.
According to the investigation, the suspects admitted to piloting a pirogue carrying migrants towards the Canary Islands, Spain. The vessel had spent thirteen days at sea after an engine failure, before being intercepted by the Senegalese Navy off the coast of Saint-Louis, as it attempted to return to shore.
The human toll of this crossing is particularly heavy. Four migrants lost their lives at sea, and their bodies were thrown into the water. A stillborn newborn was also reported; its remains were taken to the morgue at Abass Ndao Hospital in Dakar.
According to the senior captain's statements, he was recruited by two organizers based in a country in the sub-region. These two are considered the masterminds of the operation, responsible in particular for logistics and the recruitment of potential migrants.
The investigation continues in order to identify and apprehend the other suspected members of this transnational migrant smuggling network.
