Moussa Bocar Thiam officiellement mis en accusation par les députés
The resolution impeaching Moussa Bocar Thiam was adopted this Friday in a plenary session of the National Assembly of Senegal. Of the 165 registered members, 113 participated in the vote, including 28 by proxy. In accordance with the procedural rules, members of parliament who are slated to sit on the High Court of Justice of Senegal did not participate in the vote.
The vote count was as follows: 104 members voted in favor of the impeachment, no votes were cast against, and there were 3 abstentions. The resolution was thus adopted by a very large majority, allowing the prosecution to proceed before the High Court of Justice.
This adoption follows the report presented by the Law Commission, which unanimously recommended the adoption of the text. It is important to remember that being charged does not constitute a conviction. It paves the way for the case to be brought before the High Court of Justice, the only court with jurisdiction to try members of the government for acts committed in the exercise of their duties. The former Minister of Communication, Telecommunications, and Digital Affairs will now have to answer for the charges against him before this court.
