Assemblée nationale : Thierno Alassane Sall tire à boulets rouges sur le nouveau projet de régulation des médias
The National Assembly is examining the draft bill to create the National Media Regulatory Committee (CNRM) in plenary session this Tuesday, March 3. During the debates, MP Thierno Alassane Sall was highly critical of the text. According to the parliamentarian, the CNRM "is not a regulatory council, but a council for the repression of the press." He believes that the regime is placing more emphasis on punishment than on supporting the sector.
He specifically points to the possibility for the future Council to impose financial penalties, in addition to the criminal sanctions already provided for by law. According to him, this combination could create a climate of fear in newsrooms. Thierno Alassane Sall believes this provision risks leading media outlets to "think twice before inviting a guest who might be considered controversial," which, in his view, could affect editorial freedom and public debate.
Accusations of "double standards"
The MP also raised what he considers inconsistencies in the allocation of licenses. He pointed out that some media outlets that had previously broadcast tutorials on how to make Molotov cocktails now hold licenses. He also asserted that some private media groups are being subjected to pressure, to the point that some have reportedly decided against submitting applications for press subsidies.
Furthermore, Thierno Alassane Sall addressed the case of the allegedly hacked files at the Directorate of Administration and Finance (DAF), as well as allegations concerning vehicles belonging to the Senegalese Radio and Television Broadcasting (RTS) that were supposedly given to journalist Pape Alé Niang. "These are serious accusations which, at this stage, fall within the realm of political debate and, where appropriate, require clarification from the parties involved," the MP concluded.
