Aide à la presse : Le cri du cœur des correspondants régionaux, les grands oubliés du système !
Press subsidies aim to support media companies and strengthen journalistic work. But on the ground, many regional correspondents feel they are largely overlooked by this system. Yet, they are the ones who cover the bulk of the news in their regions.
In departments and towns far from major cities, press correspondents ensure the daily collection of information. Despite this central role, they often work without stable contracts, with limited resources and very low pay.
Several correspondents are denouncing a distribution of press subsidies that primarily benefits large newsrooms. On the ground, many say they see no improvement in their working conditions, despite their significant contributions to the content of newspapers, radio stations, and news websites.
For Ousmane Demba of the E-Media group, it is the regional correspondents who do the bulk of the work. Unfortunately, he laments, since President Wade came to power, regional correspondents no longer receive press subsidies.
Echoing this sentiment, Bakary Konté, from the Futurs Médias group, spoke of the need to revive regional online news outlets. This was a noble idea of Wade's that allowed correspondents to train, equip themselves, and work in excellent conditions, but above all, to connect with one another.
As for Mamadou Lamine Diédhiou, of Sédhiou Direct, he suggests that the press bosses who benefit from this financial windfall use it to support their regional agents as a form of motivation.
Some professionals are advocating for a reform of the press subsidy allocation mechanism. They are calling for direct support for regional correspondents, particularly through assistance with equipment, training, and work allowances.
For these local news actors, recognizing the role of regional correspondents in the press support system would be an important step towards fairer journalism.
