Conseil national de régulation des médias : «Cette loi est un coup d’État»
The establishment of the National Media Regulatory Council (CNRM) continues to provoke negative reactions. Critics of this institution, which replaces the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA), see it as a tool of the political powers to muzzle the press. Mamadou Ibra Kane, President of the Council of Broadcasters and Publishers of Senegal (CDEPS), shares this view. "This law is a coup against press freedom," he declared in an interview published this Thursday in L'Observateur.
He said he was convinced that "if it is maintained, if it is not withdrawn, particularly by the Constitutional Council, it will truly be a catastrophe and we will have to consider that democracy no longer exists in Senegal, that the one-party state that the Prime Minister promised us will be established in Senegal."
