Phénomène exceptionnel : Chute de glace à Ndioum (Podor)
An intense rainstorm system swept through the northern region of Senegal, particularly the Podor area, on the evening of Saturday, October 11, 2025. In Ndioum, residents witnessed an icefall, a rare phenomenon in this part of the country, reported by the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM).
This event resulted from the passage of a mesoscale convective system (MCS), a vast collection of cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds that can reach altitudes of over 15 km. These clouds, which generate heavy rain, lightning, gusts of wind, and hail, saw their ascending currents carry water droplets to cold altitudes where they froze. Too heavy or released by a weakening of the current, these ice particles fell in the form of sleet or small hailstones, some of which reached the ground without melting.
The precipitation on October 11 in the Podor area testifies to the localized intensity of the storm:
ANACIM is closely monitoring these phenomena via radar, satellites, and observation stations. It is calling on the public to remain vigilant and to report any unusual observations (hail, strong winds, heavy rain) through its official channels.
