Poussière et mauvaise qualité de l’air attendues sous 72 heures : L'ANACIM et le CGQA appellent à la vigilance

A period of dense dust is expected to affect Senegal between May 11 and 14, 2026, according to meteorological forecasts. The phenomenon is expected to begin in the northern regions of the country before gradually spreading across the entire territory during the week.

In its alert bulletin of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, ANACIM specifies that the first areas affected will be Podor, Linguère, as well as Matam and their surroundings. The dust cloud is then expected to move towards the central and coastal regions starting Tuesday, with an intensification anticipated between Wednesday and Thursday.

The Air Quality Management Centre (CGQA) is warning of a significant deterioration in atmospheric conditions. A sharp reduction in visibility is expected on several roads, accompanied by a significant increase in airborne particulate matter concentrations.

In Dakar, the situation is already considered worrying. Air quality is reported to be poor and could worsen to a very poor level within the next 72 hours if the weather conditions persist.

Health authorities are urging vigilance, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, who are considered the most vulnerable to this episode of air pollution. The risks mentioned include respiratory irritation, coughing, breathing difficulties, and the worsening of certain chronic illnesses.

In light of this situation, it is recommended to limit non-essential travel, avoid intense outdoor physical activity, wear a mask in case of prolonged exposure, stay hydrated regularly and protect vulnerable people.

ANACIM and CGQA are continuously monitoring the evolving situation and urge the public to consult official bulletins for any updates. This latest episode serves as a reminder of the recurring incursions of Saharan dust into Senegalese territory and their persistent impacts on public health and living conditions.
