The community of Cabrousse, Diembéring, the nation, through the administration and the decentralized services of the State, paid a last tribute to the mayor of Diembéring, Léopold Abba Diatta, who died on October 11, 2025.

All the testimonies were unanimous about the man who, for three years, was a "mayor close to his people," we read on the various social media posts since the announcement of his death. "Léopold carried out social acts with the greatest discretion," until the crisis that took him away, on the night of Saturday 11 to Sunday 12 October at his home in Cabrousse.

Léopold Abba Diatta served the administration and his country. ʺLéo, since our years of study at the ENA, you have remained the same. You have not changed. Neither the honors, nor the responsibilities, nor the vicissitudes of an administrative career have altered your humanism. You remained loyal in friendship. Courteous, available, and attentive, you embodied the moral elegance that distinguishes great servants of the State. You loved your land, Cabrousse, and, in general, Kassa. Your political commitment having made you the mayor of Diembéring, you inscribed it under the seal of accountability, altruism, and priesthood. You could have been satisfied with an already fulfilling administrative career, but you wanted to do better: to impact the life of your community, to contribute to improving its living conditions. "Put yourself at his service," wrote one of his comrades from the Administration and former governor of Sédhiou.

An executive at the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, Léopold Abba Diatta entered politics under the banner of the Alliance for the Republic (APR). During the 2022 territorial elections, he expressed his desire to run for the commune of Diembéring. However, the leadership of his party preferred to maintain the then mayor, Tombon Guèye, according to the columns of the national daily "Le Soleil." His tenacity and commitment to running proved him right.

Committed to the Union of Centrists of Senegal (UCS) of the former mayor of Ziguinchor, Abdoulaye Baldé, Léopold won the elections and became mayor of the commune of Diembéring. He thus became the first mayor from Cabrousse.

Léopold Abba Diatta, a man respected and loved by all, according to the testimonies of several young people, embodied hope among this section of the population and did not hesitate to support their initiatives.

The funeral was marked by women's funeral rites. The body of the late mayor was then transported to the stadium where a huge crowd awaited him, in the presence of many personalities, including the governor of Ziguinchor, the prefect of Oussouye, the sub-prefects, the president of the Oussouye Departmental Council, the elected officials of the commune of Diembéring, the commander of military zone No. 5, the commander of the Southern legion of the gendarmerie.
