Nigerian Afrobeats star Augustine Kelechi, better known as Tekno, has shared his thoughts on why modern relationships no longer seem as authentic as they once did.

According to the musician, many people have stopped fully investing in love after spending months with their partner during lockdown.

“People realized they didn’t really like each other” – Tekno

Tekno suggested that the COVID-19 lockdown forced many couples to confront realities they had previously ignored.

He explained that spending long periods of time together may have revealed flaws in the relationship that were previously masked by busy schedules.

According to him, this experience has made many people emotionally distrustful.

"People were able to spend time with their partners during this period, so maybe they realized they didn't really love them," he said.

The singer added that since then, many people have hesitated to fall deeply in love.

Tekno talks about marriage

The music star also expressed concern about what he described as the increasing difficulties faced by married couples today.

According to him, the institution of marriage seems to be facing more challenges than before. He also referred to reports involving older public figures and younger celebrities, suggesting that evolving social values have affected relationships between different generations.

"Marriages don't work. Even the wives of some of our legends are sleeping with some of the newcomers," said Tekno.

Although he did not mention any names, this remark attracted attention due to recent conversations regarding celebrity relationships.

Looking back on the past, Tekno said he missed a time when love seemed more authentic. He noted that older Nollywood films often revolved around romance and emotional connection, unlike many current productions which, in his opinion, focus heavily on celebrity and social media influence.

"There was a time when love was a real thing. Even our films revolved around love. Now, our films only serve to create buzz and influence. It no longer seems natural," he said.

Tekno added that authentic relationships require both presence and absence for people to truly appreciate one another. He added, "If you can't appreciate absence, then presence doesn't really have any meaning."
